With congress returning from summer recess, the upcoming debate and vote on the Syrian conflict is being viewed as a major distraction from meaningful debate on improving the US immigration system.

Based on the GOP House of Representative's current stance it looks like any comprehensive changes in existing law are years away not months away. Whether smaller piecemeal laws, such as mandatory E-Verify, will be passed in the interim remains to be seen.
